UK retail sales volumes rose 0.5% month-on-month in August 2025, matching July’s revised 0.5% gain and above expectations of a 0.3% increase. Growth was driven by clothing stores (+5.3%), non-store retailing (+4.0%), and specialist food shops (+4.5%), with retailers citing favorable weather as a key factor. In contrast, car fuel sales fell 2% amid higher petrol and diesel prices, partially weighing on overall growth. Over the three months to August, sales edged down 0.1%, a slower pace of decline than the 0.6% fall in the three months to July. On an annual basis, sales rose 0.7% in August, easing from July’s 1.8% increase. Compared with the same three months in 2024, trade was up 0.8%, though activity remained 2.1% below pre-pandemic levels. Online sales values climbed 0.4% from a month earlier and 4.7% year-on-year, with non-store retailing posting its seventh straight monthly gain.
