U.S. imports of goods and services jumped by $17.8 billion, or 4.4%, to a record $419.0 billion in March 2025, as businesses and consumers accelerated purchases ahead of expected price hikes following new tariff announcements by the Trump administration. Consumer goods led the surge, rising by $22.5 billion—driven largely by a $20.9 billion spike in pharmaceutical imports. Capital goods imports increased by $3.7 billion, primarily due to higher demand for computer accessories, while automotive imports rose $2.6 billion, fueled by more passenger car purchases. In contrast, imports of industrial supplies and materials fell by $10.7 billion, weighed down by declines in finished metal shapes, nonmonetary gold, and crude oil. Service imports edged down $0.1 billion, as a $0.4 billion drop in travel offset a $0.2 billion gain in transport services.
