The Chicago Business Barometer, or Chicago PMI fell to 44.6 in April 2025 from 47.6 in the prior month and slightly below market expectations of 45.5. The latest reading showed that Chicago's economic activity contracted for the 17th consecutive month and at a stronger pace, driven by a pullback in new orders and production. Meanwhile, inventories increased, likely reflecting stockpiling activity in anticipation of tariffs. Employment also went up. On the price front, the index for prices paid rose to its highest level since August 2022. The survey ran from April 1 to April 14, covering President Trump's announcement of the 'Liberation Day' tariffs and the subsequent reversal a week later.
