Consumer prices in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, decreased by 2% year-on-year in April 2025, slowing from a 2.6% drop in the previous month. This marked the eighth consecutive month of consumer deflation, but at the softest pace in four months, as prices declined more moderately for housing and utilities (-9.3% vs -11.9% in March). Moreover, costs increased at a faster pace for food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.3% vs 0.6%) and miscellaneous goods and services (3.9% vs 3.7%), while it remained unchanged for health (6.7%), education (5.6%), communication (-0.1%), and restaurants and hotels (-0.1%). Meanwhile, prices eased for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (1.7% vs 4.2%), clothing and footwear (4.1% vs 5.6%), and recreation and culture (0.4% vs 1%). In addition, deflation worsened for transport (-6.2% vs -5.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell by 0.2% in April, after a 0.3% decrease in the prior month.
