Malaysia’s annual inflation rate held steady at 1.4% in April 2025, unchanged from March and matching market expectations. It remained the lowest level since February 2021, with food prices rising the least in six months (2.3% vs 2.5% in March). At the same time, cost continued to increase for alcoholic beverages (0.8% vs 0.8%), housing (2.0% vs 1.9%), furnishing, household maintenance (0.1% vs 0.2%), health (0.9% vs 1.0%), transport (0.7% vs 0.7%), recreation (1.3% vs 1.7%), education (2.3% vs 2.2%), restaurants (2.9% vs 2.9%), financial services (1.5% vs 1.5%), and miscellaneous items (4.1% vs 3.6%). Meanwhile, prices fell further for clothing (-0.1% vs -0.2%) and communication (-4.5% vs -5.4%). Core consumer prices, excluding volatile fresh food items and administered costs, rose 2.0% yoy in April, after a 1.9% increase in the previous two months, marking the steepest pace since November 2023. Monthly, consumer prices edged up 0.1%, following a flat reading in March.
