Malaysia may need to lower its 2025 growth forecast of 4.5%–5.5% due to trade and tariff uncertainties, according to Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. However, he added that the government is taking a wait-and-see approach and is not rushing to revise the forecast, preferring to monitor how the global trade situation evolves. Speaking at an IMF event in Washington, Ghaffour said Kuala Lumpur faces a potential 24% U.S. tariff on its exports starting in July unless a deal is reached. Malaysia’s trade and second finance ministers are currently in the U.S. for negotiations. The central bank governor emphasized that the current 3% interest rate is growth-friendly and reflects inflation expectations. Earlier this week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) trimmed its GDP growth forecast for Malaysia to 4.1% this year, down from its January estimate of 4.7%, in line with a broader reduction in regional projections.
