The National Bank of Hungary held its key interest rate at 6.50% for the eighth consecutive meeting in May, in line with market expectations. The overnight central bank deposit and collateralized loan rates also remained unchanged at 5.5% and 7.5%, respectively. This decision reflects continued caution as inflation remains close to the upper bound of the central bank's tolerance band. In April 2025, headline inflation fell to 4.2% and core inflation stood at 5.0%. The Hungarian economy stagnated in Q1 2025, with weak performance in industry and construction. Retail trade rose slightly in March, while consumer confidence remained low. The NBH reaffirmed its commitment to tight monetary policy to anchor inflation expectations and ensure long-term price stability.
